Artist Intro: Matthew Scott and The House Plants

In the rich soil of Maryland’s indie music scene, something beautiful has begun to grow. Emerging from years of scattered projects, late-night jam sessions, basement rehearsals, and heartfelt performances, Matthew Scott and The House Plants are finally stepping into the light with a sound entirely of their own.

The Maryland-based indie band is made up of musicians who have spent years refining their craft across countless creative ventures, carrying with them the wisdom that only time, friendship, heartbreak, and honest music can offer. What they’ve created together feels less like a polished product and more like something living — organic, weathered, and deeply human.

Their music bends genre lines without concern for labels, blending indie rock, folk textures, emotional storytelling, and moments of raw sonic vulnerability into songs that feel both familiar and impossible to replicate. and most importantly Human. There’s an authenticity in their sound that doesn’t ask for attention loudly — it simply tells the truth and seeks connection.

Even their merchandise reflects that philosophy. Instead of mass-produced novelty items, the band offers living house plants that fans can take home and grow with alongside the music itself — a beautiful extension of the group’s identity and message of growth, patience, and care.

New Single “Desiderata”

On May 1st, 2026, the band released their debut single, Desiderata — a deeply reflective piece centered around grief, transformation, and the quiet process of becoming who you were always meant to be.

The title comes from the Latin word desiderata, meaning things that are deeply desired or essential yet not fully attained. The inspiration traces back to a moment both haunting and profound.

Matthew Scott shared the story behind the song:

“It’s special to me because my family found this poem in a charred frame in my grandfather’s basement after he passed away. I mean, it looked like it had survived a church fire or something.

I had never seen this poem before and there was just this powerful truth in the words.

Originally I wanted to write this song with the words from the poem, but I couldn’t make it feel quite right.

So, like I always do, I just sang and wrote from the heart to bring to life the feeling I get when I read this poem and think of him.

Now when people look up this song in their Google search they’ll see this poem, which is awesome. The more people who read and live by the words, the better.”

This is a picture of the inspiration for “Desiderata" that Matthew hangs in his music studio still to this day.

That spirit is embedded into every moment of Desiderata. The song doesn’t just mourn loss — it searches through it, looking for meaning in the empty beauty that remains. It’s a song about carrying a memory forward while still allowing yourself to grow into someone new.

Matthew Scott and The House Plants have been steadily building a name for themselves throughout the Frederick, Maryland area, bringing audiences into immersive performances filled with sincerity, musicianship, and emotional presence. Their live shows feel less like entertainment and more like shared experience — the kind of performance that lingers long after the final note fades.

As the band looks toward late 2026 and beyond, they’re preparing to expand into neighboring cities and continue sharing their evolving sound with new listeners across the region.

If you haven’t yet, take a moment to listen to Desiderata. Let it sit with you for a while. And keep an eye on Matthew Scott and The House Plants as they continue growing roots in the local music scene — one heartfelt song, one live performance, and one living house plant at a time
